Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani holds a 72% chance of winning the New York City mayoral race, according to prediction market Polymarket.

Current Mayor Eric Adams, who announced last Thursday that he is running as an independent, trails Mamdani at 19%.

A 33-year-old New York State Assemblyman, Mamdani is an immigrant of Indian-Ugandan descent and a Muslim.

He secured the nomination on June 24 with 44% of the vote by the Associated Press after former Gov. Andrew Cuomo—who had 36%—conceded once it became clear the race would be decided by ranked-choice voting.

His campaign has gained strong support from young voters attracted to his progressive platform and focus on affordability, especially in transportation and housing.

Mamdani has also drawn national attention for his outspoken pro-Palestine stance. At the final mayoral debate on June 8, he said he would forgo visiting Israel as mayor, preferring to stay in New York. The remark sparked widespread reactions across the political spectrum on social media.

He has publicly called Israel’s 20-month war in Gaza a genocide, a position that has further energized activists and voters critical of American foreign policy.

With weeks remaining before the Nov. 4 general election, Mamdani has earned endorsements from prominent progressives such as Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).

If elected, Mamdani would become the first Muslim and South Asian mayor of NYC.
